Since Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire, there has been frequently this vaguely homo-erotic association with modern day vampires. Well at least until you get to the Twilight series, which seems vastly focused on.. on.. well.. Hell if I know. Filling the loins of pubescent fat tween girls with a hope that someone will love them FOREVER.

*insert prolonged South Park or Family Guy vomit scene here*

Anyway.. Vampires. I stumbled upon True Blood earlier this year. I was utterly fascinated. Not so much by the gratuitous sex (though muscled bubble butt of the one-track Jason Stackhouse is with it’s appeal) as just the gratuitousness of it. Vampires as a convoluted gestalt of psychotic killer, royalty, and ravenous animal. Something about them though to me is just the magnification of human traits and impulses.

Pyscho/Sociological analysis of vampires aside, as I jumped into third season, rumors of the ramped up homo-ness of it have proven to be well founded. Even, in some cases, to a point that I am a little uncomfortable with. Not that seeing Sheriff Eric Northman get his top-daddy on is unappealing, but some of it feels contrived to create discomfort in the audience.

It’s my story teller nature that rebels against imbalance of narrative. The first two seasons, while having some prominent gay characters, were still firmly rooted in hetero-coitus. So, suddenly having virtually then entire vampire cast suddenly go butt-piratey and carpet-munchery just seems unrealistic. And I do recognize the inherent irony in that entire statement and thought.

So my internalized HB-HOMO phobia aside, are there any straight boys out there who are fans of True Blood, and what is your reaction to season of male buttocks?

I love True Blood. I’ve been watching it since it came on. Hell, I even got HBO over the summer so I could watch the latest season.

I honestly wasn’t uncomfortable with the homo scenes in season three at all. In fact I was happy to finally see Lafayette get some. And Eric Northman is hot. Even though I’m not gay, he’s hot.

Since the first season though they really have toned down the sex scenes. Seems like in Season one the show should have been called ‘Vampires killing/Jason Fucking’ to be a little more accurate on what was happening in the show.

Besides, you should be happy that homos are being portrayed like this in a show like this. I mean just look at all the damage the show Queer Eye did to your kind. Yes, I said your kind and I wont take it back.

    My kind? yeah.. My kind..

If I was a serious queer I’d get upset and point out that of the 4 gay characters and 2 potential bi-sexual ones. One is a drug deal, one is a 3000 year mass murderer, one is/was his pretentious and whiney husband, one is.. well.. Pam, and one is the admittedly very hot, but very convoluted Eric Northman.

Which leaves Jesus, our newest critter with a past. While certainly the most normal of the bunch, he’s probably doomed to some santa maria bloody disaster of an end.

yeah.. I’m happy for my kind :-)

be upset? Your ‘kind’ has all the AWESOME parts! I mean, what does the hetero side have?
      Bill ‘I’m a pussy’ Compton?
Tara ‘Watch me cry’ Black girl?
The only redeeming hetero on the show is Jason ‘Look at my ass’ Stackhouse. And even that’s a little gay.

I understand the True Blood was created by the same guy who did Six Feet Under. While I didn’t watch much more than the first few episodes, I know that it was built fundamentally of completely effed-up characters. True blood seems to hole up to that formula. I would argue that Sookie (yeah I know main character) works hard to hold onto her sense of self. And possibly my favorite character is Terry, who of all the characters, continues to do good for everyone. Even while under the mind control of Marianne he seems to have his shit.. oddly.. very well put together.
